Candle Care & Tips
Maximize your candle experience by trimming the wick to ¼ inch before burning and avoiding drafts. Burn for 3-4 hours at a time for the best fragrance throw, and don’t forget to reuse your candle jars—our simple wax removal method helps you turn them into stylish storage. (See More Below)
Candle with care
Candles are a fantastic way to add fragrance and ambiance to your home, but sometimes, they don't seem to fill the room as much as you'd like. Here are 3 key things to keep in mind to ensure you're getting the most out of your scented candles:
1. Fragrance Oil Percentage Matters:
Look for candles with a higher percentage of fragrance oil. (Fun fact: We use a high percentage of fragrance oil in our candles!) This will directly impact the candle's strength and throw (the distance the scent travels). A higher percentage of fragrance oil generally translates to a stronger scent throw.
2. Size Matters - Match Candle to Room:
Just like filling a swimming pool with a bucket of water wouldn't work, a small tea light candle or a votive candle won't effectively fragrance a large room. Choose a candle size appropriate for the space you want to fill. Larger candles (like ours!) can be more effective in bigger rooms.
3. Burn Your Candles Regularly (Don't Let Them Gather Dust!)
While it might seem counterintuitive, candles that sit unused for long periods can lose their potency. Fragrance oils can evaporate over time, leaving behind just unscented wax. To maintain optimal scent throw, burn your candles regularly and enjoy their delightful aromas!
Trim the wick to ¼’’ before each burn
Do not place your candle in a drafty area
Keep away from
children and pets
Only burn your candle
3-4 hours at a time
Never, ever, ever leave your candle unattended!
Are Candles Safe for Pets?
The warmth of a candle can make any space feel peaceful and inviting. But if you share your home with pets, you’ve probably wondered—is it actually safe to burn candles around them?
The short answer: it depends on what’s in your candle.
We believe in creating beautiful fragrances for your home while promoting responsible use around pets. While we strive to use quality ingredients in our products, we understand that every pet is unique. This guide aims to help you make informed decisions about using scented products in your pet-friendly home.
Why Ingredients Matter
Many candles on store shelves are made from paraffin wax and heavily perfumed with synthetic fragrance oils. While they may smell strong, they can release soot and trace chemicals that linger in the air—something that can be especially irritating for animals with smaller lungs or sensitive noses.
At Trillium Candle Co., we believe what you breathe in matters. That’s why we hand-pour every candle with natural soy wax, clean fragrance oils, and lead-free cotton wicks—never paraffin, dyes, or harsh additives.
Our goal is simple: create scents inspired by nature that you can enjoy freely and safely, whether you’re curled up with your dog after a hike or winding down from the day.
Understanding Pet Sensitivity
to Fragrances
Pets have a much more acute sense of smell than humans. What seems mild to us can be overwhelming to them. It's important to be aware of how scented products might affect your furry friends. Some fragrances and essential oils can pose risks to pets, including:
Respiratory irritation
Skin sensitivity
Potential toxicity if ingested
How to Keep Your Home Pet-Safe
Even when burning clean candles, there are a few ways to make sure everyone stays comfortable:
Moderation is Key: Use candles and room sprays sparingly in areas where pets spend time.
Proper Ventilation: Always use scented products in well-ventilated areas.
Trim the wick to ¼ inch before lighting.
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Out of Reach: Keep all candles and sprays out of your pet's reach to prevent accidental ingestion or burns. Keep candles on stable surfaces away from wagging tails or curious paws.
Observe Your Pet: Watch for any signs of discomfort or unusual behavior when using scented products.
Consult Your Vet: If you have concerns, especially for pets with existing health issues, consult your veterinarian.
